20th Annual Meatout Observance Sets Record!

The 20th annual Meatout observance set a new record in the number of events registered. Many more events were held without registration. Animal and consumer advocates welcomed spring in all 50 states and two dozen other countries.

Events ranged from info tables, exhibits, and lectures to cooking demonstrations, public dinners, a Congressional Reception, nd elaborate "lifestivals." Organizers asked their neighbors to "kick the meat habit on March 20th (the first day of spring)
and to explore a wholesome, nonviolent diet of vegetables, fresh fruits, and grains."

Hundreds of billboards and bus cards in Atlanta, Baltimore, Cleveland, Houston, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington, offered free Vegetarian Starter Kits. Proclamations urging citizens to explore a wholesome, nonviolent diet of vegetables, fruits, and grains were issued by the governors of Louisiana, Nevada, Rhode Island, and West Virginia and by a dozen mayors.

Celebrity entertainers Casey Kasem, Mary Tyler Moore, Ed Asner, James Cromwell, Jennie Garth, and Bill Maher served as headliners. Nearly 150 newspapers and radio stations carried reports of local events, interviews, and letters to the editor.

Earth Day Website Launched

In observance of Earth Day 2004, FARM is launching a new website veggiesforecology.org on April 22. The site will document the devastating impacts of animal agriculture on natural environment, including land, water, air, and willife. It will list links to environmental and hunger sites.

At the same time, we are publishing "Envirokicks" - small brochures summarizing environmental arguments for kicking the meat habit. These environmental versions of the famed Meatout "Kicks"
are available from Elizabeth for distribution by Earth Day event coordinators.

FARM Heroes

This column will cite the people who ensure FARM's survival and effectiveness - the directors, the staff, and major donors.

We begin this month with our directors Alex Hershaft, Elliot Katz, Laurelee Blanchard and Howard Lyman.

Alex Hershaft founded FARM in 1981 as a successor to the Vegetarian Information Service, which he launched in 1976. He feels that his passion for justice was shaped in part by his Holocaust experiences. He is particularly proud of FARM's long and effective record of reducing animal consumption.

Elliot Katz abandoned his Veterinary Medicine profession to found In Defense of Animals in 1982. IDA has scored a number of victories for animals in laboratories and for animal companions. IDA is currently focusing on the Guardian campaign and expanding its activities on behalf of farmed animals.

Laurelee Blanchard gave up a lucrative career in commercial real estate to devote five years as a full-time volunteer for FARM. She started a small farm animal sanctuary at her Hawaii home and is currently employed by Farm Sanctuary.

Howard Lyman, a fourth-generation cattle rancher, has devoted the past decade to effective promotion of veganism.. He had warned about the threat of Mad Cow Disease long before most people had heard of it. He has served as president of the International Vegetarian Union, EarthSave, and has founded the Voice for a Viable Future.

Please subscribe your friends to keep them informed of our campaigns.

FARM advocates a plant-based diet and humane treatment of farmed animals.
