Last Call for WFAD 2007 Observance

Communities in all 50 states and two dozen other countries have registered their World Farm Animals Day activities. These include vigils, cage-ins, die-ins, video screenings, food distribution, leafleting, library exhibits, and information tables.

The animals need more voices! It’s not too late to make sure that your community is represented in this global effort. If you’d like to get active in October, visit our website for helpful last-minute hints. We provide free display and handout materials, instructions, national registry, and media liaison.

Short on time? Simply distribute our colorful WFAD handouts (pictured on right) at various locations around your community. Click on the image to read the back text and request handouts now.

The purpose of World Farm Animals Day is to expose and memorialize the suffering of more than 50 billion cows, pigs, and other innocent, feeling animals in the world's factory farms and slaughterhouses. It's the one occasion when every one of us is conscience-bound to do something to raise public awareness of this tragedy.

This year’s observance was co-sponsored by In Defense of Animals. Other participating organizations included PETA, Mercy for Animals, COK, and Vegan Outreach .

FARM's Local Observance: Stages of Meat

DC area FARM activists are staging a dramatic street theater display across the street from the U.S. Department of Agriculture headquarters.

The display dramatizes the cruel treatment and slaughter of animals for food. A video of the actual process will be shown.

Stage One, illustrating the crowding of animals in factory farms, will have live humans confined in a small cage. Stage Two will have "blood-covered" human mannequins pulled upside-down along the slaughter line as the butcher makes the kill. Stage Three will feature live humans lying in two large cellophane-wrapped meat packages, complete with USDA label.

World Go Vegan Days October 26-28

FARM is once again co-sponsoring this year's observance of In Defense of Animals' World Go Vegan Days on October 26-28. The purpose is to promote awareness of veganism, to educate the public about the benefits of a plant-based diet and to promote the availability and selection of meat and dairy alternatives in mainstream supermarkets, restaurants, and catering services. The observance caps a month of vegan promotion that leads with World Vegetarian Day October 1st and World Farm Animals Day October 2nd.

The World Go Vegan Days website offers a number of suggestions to help you raise your community's awareness of veganism. Examples include potluck dinners, restaurant outings, cooking demonstrations, feed-ins, public lectures, leafleting, information tables, library exhibits, street theater, and colorful "lifestivals."

Visit the WGVD website to speak out for veganism in your community.

Sabina Proposals Due October 31st

We invite small groups promoting plant-based eating, particularly in developing countries, to submit their proposals for a FARM Sabina Fund grant by October 31st.

Last year, the Sabina Fund awarded small grants to promote plant-based eating and respect for animals to more than 20 local groups in the U.S., Portugal, Romania, Israel, India, Kenya, Nigeria, and Uganda. In India and Kenya, the awards were made to coalitions because of the large number of proposals received.

Many of the projects display exceptional dedication and creativity. A U.S. group did an intensive leafleting tour of dozens of Midwestern colleges. A Portuguese group conducted that country’s first vegetarian awareness campaign. An Israeli group staged a large funeral march for farmed animals followed by a dramatic "die-in." The Indian and African groups promote plant-based eating to local villagers.

The Sabina Fund was launched in 1999 to honor FARM President Alex Hershaft's mother who had passed away in 1996.

Please visit the Sabina Fund website to help sponsor a project and/or to submit a proposal according to the stated guidelines by October 31st.
